HIP STRENGTH AFTER SURGERY: (FAI and Labral Tear Exercises)
I got this question in my email inbox the other day...
"I just had surgery for FAI / labral tear...but the results were not as good as I hoped. How can I strengthen my hips after the surgery?"
This video and blog are about 4 simple exercises to start the process of recovery.
Remember to always work in conjunction with a trained physical therapist. If you are on your own, go very slow and be mindful.
Beginner Strength Exercises after Hip Surgery
- Birdog
- Short range adductor lift offs

Also, you will want to include a well rounded approach in addition strength exercises. Make sure you include:
- Pain management. Many pain-relief strategies can be helpful in the early stages. Learning how to sleep, sit, stand and walk better all contribute to your recovery. Check out our recent YouTube videos for some sleeping tips.
- Movement re-education. It is very likely you may be moving poorly. This can cause increased pain and weakness at the hip joint. Find a trained therapist or movement specialist who really understands hip joint issues and ask them to watch you move. Use video if needed.
- Manual therapy. Hands-on treatments is invaluable to decrease your pain and improve motion and strength. Whether you are doing self-myofascial release or using the hands of a skilled therapist - don't skip this!
- Functional training. Once your pain, strength, and range of motion improve, it's time to transition to more challenging exercises. Think squats, deadlifts, lunges, running and full sporting activities. Progress slowly during this stage!
That's it! Hope those exercises were helpful. If you want a systematic approach to healing hips, check out The FAI Fix below.
