Cam Impingment, Subchondral Cysts and NO PAIN? (X-ray UPDATE 2015!)
I got an X-ray to check for FAI hip morphology the other day…and the news was pretty scary!
Since I was originally told I had FAI (5+ years ago) I haven’t had any more X-rays, MRI’s or scopes. Instead I spent that time slowly working my way out of pain and into full hip function.
It took a long time and a lot of work – but it was totally worth it!
Why did I get an X-ray if I had no symptoms? Well now that I am completely pain free and symptom free – I was curious to see what the inside of my hip looked like – so I decided to get anX-ray!
The results might surprise you If you’ve seen my videos of doing the splits or squatting / olympic lifting.
The report found that I had:
- Broad subcapital neck
- Extra convexity (too much bone) on the femoral head
- Combo is often referred to as “Cam Impingement”
- Subchondral cyst
- Combination of findings indicate FAI
Reading the report I was actually had that old familiar fear of “OMG WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!” come up!
…then I slapped myself and gently reminded my panicking mind that just last week I was in a deep squat position with no problems!
TAKE HOME POINT?
Maybe it’s not entirely a bone issue. Maybe its time to start thinking about the muscles and motor control!
